Knee pain during squats: what to do

Describe the symptoms and seek assessment before pushing through.

Direct answer: Knee pain during a squat cannot be diagnosed from an online guide. Stop the movement that triggers it and record where and when it happens. Persistent symptoms need assessment, and significant warning signs may require urgent medical attention.

Record without provoking it again

Note any injury, sudden onset or recent load change. State whether one knee is affected, whether it is swollen and whether you can bear weight. Do not repeat painful sets just to obtain a video; a clear description is useful.

Adapt after appropriate advice

A healthcare assessment can guide limits and return to exercise. Share that advice with your coach before changing exercises or load. There is no universally safe substitute for every painful knee, and switching to a machine does not establish the cause.

Recognise urgent signs

Inability to bear weight, deformity, major swelling or a hot red knee with fever needs urgent care. Recurring pain should also be assessed even if you can finish the session. Follow local healthcare arrangements where you live.

What to record and discuss

  1. Stop the movement that provokes pain.
  2. Record onset, location and other symptoms.
  3. Share assessment advice with your coach.

Questions about this topic

Is it always a technique problem?
No. Several causes are possible, and a video alone cannot determine the diagnosis.
Can I replace squats with leg press?
A suitable change depends on your symptoms and assessment; there is no universal substitute.
